Utah Baseball Falls to Arizona State, 15-7

TEMPE, Ariz. – The Utah baseball team couldn’t hold an early lead as the Utes fell to Arizona State, 15-7, on Saturday evening.

Utah (9-27, 4-10 Pac-12) held a 6-4 lead before Arizona State scored 10 runs over the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

Utah’s nine hits were scattered among nine different players. Wade Gulden and Rykker Tom each drove in two runs on the night. Erick Migueles and Oliver Dunn both hit triples for the Utes.

Tanner Thomas pitched three innings, allowing six runs on five hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Josh Lapiana pitched 2 2/3 innings, earning the loss after allowing eight runs on nine hits with a strikeout and two walks. Spencer Kevin Johnson struck out five over 2 1/3 innings, allowing one run on two hits with one walk.

Utah struck first with a run in the second with Migueles scoring on a ground out after a leadoff triple. Arizona State quickly took a 4-1 lead with four runs in the bottom of the second after three hits and two hit batters.

The Utes rallied quickly, scoring four of their own in the top of the third to take a 5-4 lead. The Utes had three hits in the inning, including an RBI single from Gulden. DaShawn Keirsey, Jr., and Davis Delorefice also had hits in the inning, Dunn sent home a run on a ground out and Tom hit a sacrifice fly for a run. Utah increased its lead with a run in the fourth inning with Chris Rowan scoring on an error after a leadoff double.

Arizona State took the lead back with three runs in the bottom of the fourth and increasing that lead with four runs in the fifth and three runs in the sixth inning for a 14-6 lead.

Dunn hit a leadoff triple in the seventh inning and scored on an infield single from Tom to get the Utes a run back. ASU added a run in the eighth for a 15-7 lead.

Utah and Arizona State play game three of the series on Sunday, April 22, at 1:30 p.m. MDT (12:30 p.m. MST/PT).
