(Salt Lake City, UT) — A bill that would try to establish new policies on competition by transgender athletes is advancing in the state Senate. House Bill 11 will go to the Senate floor after a 4-3 vote in committee yesterday. The bill by state Representative Kera Birkland would establish a commission to evaluate children to determine if they are eligible to compete in school sports. The commission would use factors like height and weight to determine eligibility. LGBTQ advocates have denounced the bill, but it has received support from Republicans as an alternative to an outright ban on transgender athletic participation.
