(Salt Lake City, UT) — A bill that would let Utah’s indigenous students wear tribal attire and decorations during high school graduations is one step away from the governor’s desk. The Senate Education Committee unanimously passed House Bill 30 yesterday. The bill would prevent any school or school board from stopping indigenous students from wearing items such as tribal feathers, beaded attire or moccasins during a graduation ceremony. Indigenous leaders have supported the bill, saying graduation is an important cultural milestone for members of their tribes.
