Tom Chambers To Have Utah Jersey Retired February 5

SALT LAKE CITY-In news released Thursday, University of Utah director of athletics Mark Harlan announced former Utah men’s basketball center Tom Chambers will have his No. 42 retired February 5.

Chambers, who starred for the Utes from 1977-1981, will be the ninth former Utes basketball star to have his jersey retired.

The late Wat Misaka will have his jersey retired posthumously January 22.

While with the Utes, Chambers was a two-time All-Western Athletic Conference center.

He led the Utes to two NCAA Tournament appearances, including a Sweet 16 appearance in 1981. The Utes also won the WAC in the 1980-81 season.

Chambers was selected No. 8 overall in the 1981 NBA Draft by the San Diego Clippers.

The 6-9 Chambers averaged 14.6 points and 7.6 rebounds per game for the Utes.

In the NBA, Chambers became a 4-time All-Star and averaged 18.1 points and 6.1 rebounds per game for the San Diego Clippers (1981-1983), Seattle SuperSonics (1983-1988), Phoenix Suns (1988-1993), Utah Jazz (1993-1995), Charlotte Hornets (1996-1997) and Philadelphia 76ers (1997-1998).

Chambers also played professionally overseas in Israel in the 1995-1996 season.

Chambers is a native Utahan as he was born in Ogden. He starred at Fairview High School of Boulder, Colo. as well.
