TUNBRIDGE, Vt. (AP) — Voters in four small Vermont towns have opposed a massive development by a Utah businessman that would be based on the papers of Mormon founder Joseph Smith.
Tunbridge, Royalton, Sharon and Strafford voted against the idea at their annual town meetings on Tuesday.
David Hall has been buying land near Smith’s birthplace in Sharon, Vermont, to build — years in the future — what’s described as an economically, ecologically and socially sustainable development with housing for 20,000 people. He has said the community wouldn’t be based on religion and would be open to anyone.
Organizers of the Town Meeting Day votes had wanted to gauge residents’ feelings and send a message to the developer with the nonbinding resolutions.
