After decades of trying to jump through Government hoops in order to build the Narrows Dam and reservoir, the Sanpete Water Conservancy District is investigating alternatives, including building a tunnel to bring 3,200-acre feet of water to Sanpete County. A report prepared by the engineering firm of Hansen, Allen & Luce, who has been working with the Conservancy District for years on the Narrows project, recently detailed a plan to build a tunnel on private lands, divert water from Gooseberry Creek, and deliver that water to storage in Sanpete County. Because all the property involved in the diversion plan is privately owned, it would not be subject to EPA and U.S. Army Corps of Engineer approval. The project also has the potential of costing several million dollars less than the original Narrows project. After hearing the report, Conservancy District Board Chairman Ed Sunderland said the Narrows dam and reservoir project is very nearly “dead,” and the board will proceed with the water diversion alternative.
