OGDEN, Utah-In news released late Monday, Weber State men’s basketball will honor former legendary Wildcats head coach Dick Motta.
Motta will be honored March 5 for Senior Day at the Dee Events Center as the Wildcats host in-state foe Southern Utah.
The jersey retired in his honor will feature the number “164” as Motta went 164-50 (.766) for the Wildcats from 1960-1968.
Motta led the program into Division I in 1963-1964, completing the Wildcats’ transition from junior college status during his tenure.
Motta led the Wildcats to Big Sky titles in 1965, 1966 and 1968. In 1968, he led the Wildcats to their first NCAA Tournament appearance. That season, Weber State fell 68-57 to New Mexico State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Motta, a native of Midvale, Utah and graduate of Jordan High School of Sandy, also went 935-1017 (.479) as a head coach in the NBA. He coached for the Chicago Bulls (1968-1976), Washington Bullets (1976-1980), Dallas Mavericks (1980-1987; 1994-1996) and Sacramento Kings (1989-1992). He also served as a Bulls’ executive from 1973-1976 in a dual role capacity. This ranks Motta 13th all-time in NBA victories.
Motta is to be the first coach in Wildcats history to have a jersey retired in his honor.
