LOGAN, Utah-Wednesday morning, following information that emerged late Tuesday night, Utah State University Interim President Al Smith confirmed the departure of Diana Sabau, vice president and director of USU athletics. Sabau will stay on duty until July 21 at which point she will accept a new position at the University of Maryland.
Sabau had been in this role since August 21, 2023. During her time at Logan, the Aggies accepted an invitation to join the newly configured Pac-12 Conference in September 2024 and USU won six conference championships. This includes a school-record four during the 2023-24 academic year (women’s volleyball, men’s basketball, men’s tennis and women’s soccer).
In her tenure, USU also announced the Reach & Rise campaign, the most ambitious athletics fundraising initiative in program history.
Sabau also brought in new football coach Bronco Mendenhall and retained women’s soccer head coach Manny Martins who has led the Aggies to back-to-back conference championships.
In the 2025 spring semester, USU student-athletes posted a 3.51 cumulative GPA and a 3.57 term GPA, the highest GPAs in department history.
