SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — There will be home state bragging rights up for grabs for the winner of Thursday’s game between No. 24 Utah and Weber State.
The schools are located about 35 miles apart. The Utes have won five straight over the Wildcats, outscoring them by a 230-61 margin.
It will be the third time they’ve opened the season against each other. Utah won 41-10 in 2018 and in 1984 the Utes won 52-16. Utah has won 13 of its last 14 home games.
The late Ty Jordan remains in the hearts of Utah players as they open the season against Weber State at the expanded Rice-Eccles Stadium. The 24th-ranked Utes will wear a decal on their helmets as a tribute to the talented tailback who died in December at the age of 19 in what police concluded was an accidental shooting.
Jordan ran for 597 yards and six TDs in a season shortened to five games, earning the Pac-12 freshman offensive player of the year award. Utah is 5-0 all-time against the Wildcats.
