Fitzgerald Announces SUU Football Coaching Staff

CEDAR CITY, Utah-Tuesday, Southern Utah University head football coach DeLane Fitzgerald announced his coaching staff for the upcoming season.

Four coaches have been retained from previous coach Demario Warren’s staff and there are six new additions.

Those who have been retained include offensive line coach Aaron Fernandez, wide receivers coach Brady Measom, linebackers coach Solomon Tapasa and defensive line coach Ryan Hunt.

Hunt’s responsibilities are altered from last season. He will primarily be coaching the interior of the defensive line and will also serve as the program’s director of football operations.

New coaches are as follows:

Blair Peterson-Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks Coach. Peterson has served as BYU’s offensive analyst since 2019. He has previously coached at Rice, Florida International and Texas as well.

John Kelling-Defensive Coordinator/Safeties Coach. He served as the head coach at NCAA Division II Lock Haven previously. He coached the Bald Eagles to a 1-10 record during his tenure. He has previous coaching stints at North Dakota and NCAA Division II institutions Minnesota State-Mankato and Augustana State (S.D.).

Shawn Magginson-Defensive Ends Coach. Magginson joins Fitzgerald from Frostburg State.

Will Brunson-Tight Ends Coach. Brunson played quarterback and served as an assistant under Fitzgerald at Frostburg State.

Nick Rosser-Cornerbacks Coach. Rosser served under Fitzgerald at Frostburg State in the same role.

Andrew Bates-Strength & Conditioning Coach. Bates served in the same capacity for fellow NCAA FCS school Hampton last season. Prior for coaching for the Pirates in this role, Bates worked at NCAA FCS Jacksonville for 9.5 seasons. Bates left the Dolphins when the university discontinued their football program.
