(Salt Lake City, UT) — Senator Mitt Romney says it will take billions of dollars to preserve the Great Salt Lake, though he believes the payoff will be worth the price. The Utah Republican said yesterday that the dwindling water levels in the lake are a national concern and that his colleagues in Congress are starting to take notice. Romney has introduced a bill that would put ten-million dollars toward studying saline lakes to better understand the ecosystem that creates and sustains them. He says recommendations from that study to begin coming in next year. The lake hit a historic low earlier this month and Utah officials are exploring multiple ideas, including a pipeline from the Pacific Ocean that would pump seawater into the lake.
