Republican Lawmaker Says Voucher Lobbyist Should Resign

(Salt Lake City, UT) — A Utah lawmaker says a lobbyist who supports a bill to tie teacher raises to a school voucher program should resign from her position. Republican state Senator Mike McKell of Spanish Fork called for the resignation of Allison Sorensen yesterday. McKell was responding to an audio tape that showed Sorensen saying she wanted to “destroy public education” during a meeting about the voucher program bill currently working its way through the Utah Legislature. Sorensen is the executive director of Education Opportunity for Every Child, a group that supports the voucher bill. Other Republican leaders were also critical of the comments, saying there was no support in the legislature for an end to public education. Sorensen issued an apology last night, calling the comments thoughtless and inappropriate.
