SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah’s House of Representatives has approved giving a $1.72 million tax break ever year to a Utah-based nuclear waste disposal company.

The tax break comes as Utah’s governor has called on lawmakers to scale back tax breaks.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports Salt Lake City-based EnergySolutions was the largest single donor to lawmakers last year, giving $67,700 to 43 lawmakers.

Herriman Republican Rep. John Knotwell sponsors the bill reducing annual radioactive waste inspection fees the company must pay. He says it puts the company at a disadvantage with similar companies in other states.

The fees normally go toward education. Knotwell’s bill would money from elsewhere in the budget to make up for the cut.

EnergySolutions spokesman Mark Walker did not respond to an emailed message seeking comment.
