(Salt Lake City, UT) — Former state senator Derek Kitchen is running to represent Utah’s newly drawn First Congressional District. He announced his candidacy yesterday. Kitchen gained national attention in 2014 when he and his partner sued the state for marriage equality in Kitchen v. Herbert, which legalized same-sex marriage in Utah. He also previously served on the Salt Lake City Council. Officials say the race for the new district is expected to be competitive.
