Book Behind “Stand By Me” Banned In Utah Schools

(Salt Lake City, UT) — The Stephen King book that inspired the films “Stand By Me” and “The Shawshank Redemption” is now banned in Utah public schools. The 1982 book Different Seasons includes two stories that were adapted into the iconic movies. Different Seasons is one of 17 books that the Utah State Board of Education has banned so far this year. A law passed in 2024 allows books to be banned statewide if three school districts find them objectionable. Several award-winning books are now banned, including Water For Elephants and The Perks of Being a Wallflower.
