(Salt Lake City, UT) — The Utah branch of the American Civil Liberties Union is suing over a law that allows for book bans. The ACLU is being joined by several people, including two students who do not want to be named. The estate of award-winning novelist Kurt Vonnegut is also part of the complaint. They think the law violates the First Amendment. HB29 allows books to be banned from school libraries when at least three districts agree. Supporters say it allows books to be taken away if they have sexual content or other objectionable themes. The most recent banned book is the novel that inspired the movie “Wicked”.
