LOGAN, Utah-Saturday, Utah State men’s basketball (13-5, 2-3 in Mountain West Conference play) seeks to snap a 3-game losing streak by hosting the Nevada Wolf Pack (10-6, 3-1 in Mountain West) at the Spectrum.
The Aggies have fallen on considerably hard times of late as their last win against a Division I opponent was December 21 against Florida, a 65-62 win at Sunrise, Fla. at the Orange Bowl Basketball Classic.
This is the first 3-game losing streak for the Aggies in the Craig Smith (41-12, .774 at Utah State; 120-67, .642 as a collegiate head coach) era.
Utah State is fourth nationally in total assists (298), and second in the country in total rebounds (742) and free throws made (303).
The Aggies score 78.2 points per game which ranks them 45th nationally in scoring offense.
Senior guard Sam Merrill is the Aggies’ leading scorer (17.8 points per game) while he also posts 4.8 rebounds per contest.
Sophomore forward Justin Bean is second nationally with 192 rebounds (10.7 boards per game) while also netting 13.4 points per contest and a team-best 21 blocked shots.
Junior forward Alphonso Anderson (10.4 points, 4.5 rebounds per game) and sophomore guard Brock Miller (10.1 points per game) also score in double figures on-average this season for the Aggies.
Junior guard Abel Porter leads Utah State with 70 assists and Portuguese national, senior guard Diogo Brito, has a team-best 32 steals.
The Aggies surrender 64.1 points per game, which ranks them 72nd nationally in scoring defense.
Nevada is coached by Steve Alford who is 10-6 (.625) in his first season at the helm of the Wolf Pack’s program. Alford is 519-275 (.654) as a collegiate head coach. He has previous stints at Missouri State, Iowa, New Mexico and UCLA.
The Wolf Pack scores 75.6 points per game, ranking Nevada 94th nationally in scoring offense.
Junior guard Jalen Harris leads the Wolf Pack in both scoring (17.4 points per game) and rebounding (6.5 boards per game).
Senior guards Jazz Johnson (17.1 points per game) and Lindsey Drew (12.9 points, 5.8 rebounds per game, team-bests in assists [72] and steals [20]) also score in double figures on-average for Nevada.
Freshman forward K.J. Hymes leads the Wolf Pack in blocked shots with 20.
Nevada surrenders 70.6 points per game which ranks the Wolf Pack 218th nationally in scoring defense.
The Aggies lead the Wolf Pack 36-23 all-time and 20-5 at Logan.
