Sam Merrill; Timmy Allen, Earn Weekly Honors Earlier This Week

LOGAN, Utah/SALT LAKE CITY-Earlier this week, a pair of Utah college basketball stars earned weekly  honors for their heroics in wins for Utah State and Utah earlier this week.

Tuesday, Utah State senior guard Sam Merrill was honored for posting 21 points apiece in wins over South Florida (76-74) and Florida (65-62) this past weekend.

This netted the Bountiful High School product Mountain West Conference player of the week and College Sports Madness High-Major Player of the Week honors.

In addition to posting 21 points per game against the Bulls and Gators, Merrill also netted 6.5 rebounds and 4 assists per game for the 12-2 (2-0 in Mountain West Conference play) Aggies.

Utah State returns to action Saturday at 2:00 pm at the Spectrum in Logan by hosting NAIA school Eastern Oregon.

Utah sophomore forward Timmy Allen earned Pac-12 player of the week honors as well Tuesday.

Allen, a rising star out of Mesa, Ariz., averaged 23 points, 7.5 rebounds and 3 assists in a 69-66 win over Kentucky and an 80-52 loss to San Diego State.

Allen currently averages a team best 21 points and 7.4 rebounds per game for the 9-3 Utes who return to action January 2 against Oregon State. This commences the Pac-12 portion of the season for Utah.
