BYU Football Celebrates Homecoming By Hosting Boise State Saturday

PROVO, Utah-Saturday, BYU football (2-4) hosts No. 13 (in The Associated Press poll)/No. 14 (coaches poll) Boise State (6-0, 3-0 in Mountain West Conference play) for an 8:15 pm kickoff at LaVell Edwards Stadium that you can hear on KSVC AM 980/100.5 FM or online at midutahradio.com.

The reeling Cougars have lost three straight games after winning two of their first three games to start the season.

BYU has also been vexed with bad luck at quarterback as freshman quarterback Jaren Hall (15-23, 148 yards, TD) was injured against South Florida in the 4th Quarter. This forced the Cougars to go to third-string signal-caller, freshman Baylor Romney (6-10, 73 yards) in the 27-23 loss to the Bulls Saturday.

The Cougars are 105th nationally in scoring offense (22.3 points per game). Senior tailback Emmanuel Esukpa (43 car, 184 yards, 2 TD’s) leads the Cougars’ running game.

BYU’s leading receiver is senior wide-out Aleva Hifo (23 rec, 303 yards, 2 TD’s) with sophomore receiver Dax Milne (11 rec, 153 yards, 2 TD’s) leading the Cougars in yards per reception at 13.9 yards per snag.

Four different Cougars have recorded a sack on the season: junior defensive lineman Khyiris Tonga, sophomore linebacker Chaz Ah You, sophomore defensive lineman Lorenzo Fauatea and junior defensive lineman Uriah Leiataua.

Four different BYU defenders have recorded a forced fumble: Tonga, Ah You, Fauatea and freshman linebacker Tyler Allgeier.

The Broncos come into Saturday night’s tilt as one of the nation’s best teams in virtually every category.

They are tied for 26th in the nation in scoring offense (37 points) with Hawaii.

Freshman signal-caller Hank Bachmeier has completed 61.9 percent of his passes (109-176) for 1,547 yards, nine touchdowns and three interceptions.

The Broncos have a pair of bruising tailbacks in redshirt junior Robert Mahone (75 car, 375 yards, 5 TD’s) and freshman George Holani (65 car, 366 yards, TD).

Senior receiver John Hightower (24 rec, 444 yards, 5 TD’s) is Bachmeier’s favorite target and sophomore wide-out Khalil Shakir (29 rec, 414 yards, 3 TD’s) has also been solid for Boise State in the passing game.

Redshirt senior kicker Eric Sachse has made eight of his nine field goals on the season and 27 of his 28 PAT’s on the season for the Broncos.

Boise State ranks 27th nationally in scoring defense (19.5 points per game) and have posted 19 sacks on the season, tying them for 18th nationally with Charlotte, South Florida and Michigan.

The Broncos’ brightest star on defense is redshirt junior STUD Curtis Weaver (9 sacks, forced fumble).

The Broncos have nine forced fumbles on the season, with junior nose Kekaula Kaniho’s two leading the way.
