Utah Football Hosts Arizona State Saturday In Battle of Ranked Teams

SALT LAKE CITY-Saturday afternoon, No. 13 (The Associated Press poll)/No. 14 (coaches poll) Utah (5-1, 2-1 in Pac-12 play) hosts No. 17 (in both polls) Arizona State (5-1, 2-1 in Pac-12) at Rice-Eccles Stadium.

The Utes are currently 94-35 (.728) all-time at present-day Rice-Eccles Stadium and 66-24 (.733) at home under head coach Kyle Whittingham (2004-present).

Utah is 35th nationally in scoring offense (34.8 points per game) and have been especially effective in the second half, outscoring opponents 89-29 in the latter two quarters this season.

This is primarily because of complementary football with the offensive line ranking third nationally in sacks allowed (0.67 sacks per game) and the offense is fifth in the nation in time of possession (34:52 per game).

By virtue of the excellence of senior signal-caller Tyler Huntley completing a third-best in the nation 75.6 percent of his passes (99-131), the Utes rank third nationally in overall quarterback completion percentage (75.7 percent).

Furthermore, Utah ranks seventh nationally in passing efficiency (183.38). Individually, Huntley ranks fifth nationally in passing efficiency (187.6).

With 9 touchdown passes and no interceptions, Huntley has helped the Utes become one of only three teams this season to not throw an interception at the FBS level (Kent State and Georgia Southern are the others).

The Utes are tied for third nationally with only three turnovers on the season.

Huntley has also thrown for 1,393 yards on the season, or 232.2 yards per game.

Utah also ranks 21st nationally in rushing offense, posting 228.8 yards on the ground per game.

Senior tailback Zack Moss has run for 514 yards on the season for six touchdowns on 7.6 yards per carry (5th nationally).

Huntley has also been an effective runner, posting three rushing touchdowns on 4.5 yards per tote.

Senior receiver Demari Simpkins (14 rec, 188 yards, TD) and sophomore wide-out Jaylen Dixon (12 rec, 161 yards, TD) are each emerging for the Utes, symmetrically averaging 13.4  yards per grab.

Freshman kicker Jadon Redding has made six of his eight field goals on the season and all 25 PAT attempts for the Utes.

Defensively, Utah is tied for eight nationally in scoring defense (13.2 points per game) with San Diego State.

The Utes are tied for third nationally with three defensive touchdowns and second in the nation with three interceptions returned for scores.

Furthermore, Utah is second nationally in rushing defense (52.8 yards per game) and 10th in total defense (271.5 yards per game) in the land.

The Utes’ defensive stars include senior defensive end Bradlee Anae (4 sacks, forced fumble) and sophomore linebacker Devin Lloyd (3 sacks, interception).

Senior linebacker Francis Bernard and senior defensive back Julian Blackmon have two interceptions apiece for the Utes.

Arizona State comes into this game having won two straight against California (24-17) and Washington State (38-34) after stumbling against Colorado (31-34) on September 21, the Sun Devils’ sole loss of the season to date.

The Sun Devils are 92nd nationally in scoring offense (25.3 points per game). Freshman signal-caller Jaylen Daniels has been magnificent on the season, completing 63.07 percent of his passes (111-176) for eight scores and an interception.

Junior tailback Eno Benjamin (125 car, 529 yards, 7 TD’s) has been a stalwart for the Sun Devils on the season. Senior receiver Brandon Aiyuk (31 rec, 651 yards, 5 TD’s) ranks 18th nationally with 21 yards per grab.

Redshirt sophomore kicker Cristian Zendejas has made 11 of 14 field goals on the season for the Sun Devils and all 17 of his PAT attempts.

Arizona State ranks 16th nationally (17.7 points per game) in scoring defense and 12th in the nation against the run (91.7 yards per game).

Sophomore defensive lineman Jermayne Lole leads the Sun Devils in sacks with 2.5 on the season.

Redshirt freshman Cam Phillips and sophomore safety Aashari Crosswell have an interception apiece for Arizona State.

Nine different Sun Devils have recorded a forced fumble: sophomore linebacker Darien Butler, sophomore linebacker Merlin Robertson, Phillips, redshirt senior linebacker Khaylan Kearse-Thomas, redshirt junior defensive back Jack Jones, Crosswell, senior defensive back Kobe Williams and freshman linebacker Case Hatch.

The Sun Devils lead the Utes 22-8 all-time and 7-4 at Salt Lake City in a series dating back to 1972.
