SAN BRUNO, Calif.-Tuesday, BYU junior cross country/track star Whittni Orton was honored as the West Coast Conference Female Runner of the Week for her heroics this past weekend.
Orton, a former Panguitch High School multi-sport star athlete, won the women’s 6000-meter run championship at the Bill Dellinger Invitational last Saturday at Springfield, Ore.
To win this individual title, Orton posted a career-best time of 19:25.80. This time is also a BYU school-record individual time and helped the Cougar women finish second with a collective score of 60, just behind host Oregon, who won with a score of 54.
Orton and her teammates are next in action October 19 at the Pre-Nationals Event at Terre Haute, Ind., hosted by Indiana State University.
This meet is a precursor for the national championship meet November 23, which will also be hosted by the Sycamores.
