Great Utah Shakeout chance to prepare for earthquake emergency

Utahans have a chance to prepare for the next big Utah earthquake Thursday.

The Great Utah Shakeout will take place across the state with many local emergency alert systems being tested. At 10:15 a.m., test sirens will blare throughout the State.

According to Sevier County Emergency Management Director Cody Barton, officials want people to participate in their homes and businesses by assessing their own emergency preparedness.

“Mostly if you simply take the time to be aware of your surroundings,” Barton says.

Recommended safety actions during an earthquake include dropping, finding cover and holding on till the shaking stops to avoid falling objects.

Barton also suggests having food and emergency supplies ready to go in something like a 72 hour kit.

“I’ve kinda pushed passed 72 into the 96 and almost, say you can’t take care yourself for a week, than you need to do some serious looking around and figure out how you can make that happen before someone shows up on your door to say, ‘hey, we’re here to help,'” Barton says.

A 5.0 earthquake on the Richter scale could cause significant damage to homes in the state. A 4.1 quake hit central Utah over the weekend, but no damage or injuries were reported.
