BYU Baseball Hosts Saint Mary’s For the Weekend

PROVO, Utah-This weekend, BYU baseball (18-5, 4-2 in West Coast Conference play), winners of 12 of their last 14 games, hosts the Saint Mary’s Gaels (16-9, 3-0 in WCC play) as the WCC seasons ensue for these squads.

The Cougars are in the midst of a four-week homestand which has seen them go 14-2 since March 5.

With the exception of a road game at Utah Valley (a 14-13 win March 19), the Cougars have played all of their games at Miller Field, outscoring opponents 102-52 in that span.

This streak has also placed Cougars coach Mike Littlewood (2012-present at BYU) three wins away from the 200-win plateau.

Littlewood is currently 197-148 (.570) and 96-69 (.582) in WCC play.

Although the Cougars have been highly successful, they are only third in the WCC with the Gaels, oddly enough, leading in the conference standings.

The Cougars rank 20th nationally in team WHIP at 1.19 runs and ranked 24th in team ERA at 3.12.

Getting the nod for the Cougars Thursday evening is senior right-handed pitcher Jordan Wood (a 1.63 ERA this year) while Friday Littlewood will ride with sophomore right-handed pitcher Easton Walker (an 0.00 ERA in 25.2 innings, the best in the nation). Saturday, BYU goes with right-handed pitcher Justin Sterner (33 strikeouts in 29.1 innings).

The Gaels are paced by junior outfielder Joe Vranesh (4 home runs, 21 RBI on the season). Freshman right-handed pitcher Tyler Thornton (4-0 on the season) has been a stalwart for Saint Mary’s on the mound.

The Cougars lead the all-time series against the Gaels 19-10.
