Utah Lifts Advisory On Eating Carp From Utah Lake

(Provo, UT) — A health advisory warning people not to eat carp from Utah Lake has been lifted after more than 20 years. State officials say testing shows levels of toxic chemicals known as PCBs have fallen enough that common carp are now considered safe to consume. The advisory had been in place since 2006 because of contamination linked to the former Geneva Steel Mill. Officials credit years of restoration efforts, including the removal of roughly 30-million pounds of carp, for the improvement. However, health officials still advise limiting consumption of channel catfish from the lake due to remaining PCB concerns.
