One person is dead and 18 were hospitalized after a crash involving two Wasatch Academy school buses and a pickup truck. The crash occurred Dec. 12 around 8:30 p.m. on US-89 between Ephraim and Mt. Pleasant. According to a press release from the Utah Highway Patrol, “the pickup truck was traveling southbound when it went left of center. Both buses were traveling northbound at that same location. The pickup truck grazed the first bus and then struck the second bus head on.” There were no reported injuries in the first bus, but all 17 students and the driver of the second bus were transported to a nearby hospital with varying injuries. Two occupants were in critical condition and flown by air ambulance for medical treatment. According to the press release, “the driver of the pickup truck, 43-year-old Melvin Beckstead, succumbed to his injuries at the scene of the crash. Fatigued driving is being suspected as the cause of the crash.” In a Sunday night update, officials confirmed that as many as three of the 17 injured students remain hospitalized.
