Dixie State Softball Stars Receive Division II All-American Recognition

ST. GEORGE, Utah, Despite a disappointing loss in the NCAA Super Regionals at the hands of Chico State, Dixie State softball still had an impressive season and two of their stars were duly honored.

Last Thursday, Trailblazers standouts, outfielder Janessa Bassett and pitcher Cambrie Hazel were honored by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association and the Division II Conference Commissioners Association.

Bassett, a star senior out of Stansbury Park, Utah (Stansbury Park H.S.) and Hazel, a precocious freshman out of Spanish Fork, Utah (Spanish Fork H.S.) were the recipients of postseason awards.

Bassett was named as an “honorable mention” D2CAA All-American and wraps up her collegiate career as a 4-time All-American. In 2018, Bassett hit .370, amassing 61 hits, 36 RBI, seven home runs, eight doubles, seven triples, and netting a Pac-West-conference best 74 runs scored.

This season, she was named as the Pac-West player of the year three times and was the NFCA National Player of the Week February 14.

Bassett is the Trailblazers’ current all-time leader in hits (284), total bases (413), stolen bases (162), walks drawn (115) and triples (28).

Hazel is a third-team All-American as named by the NFCA and joins Bassett as the only freshman to ever be named as an All-American.

Hazel was named the Pac-West’s pitcher of the week four times and was named as freshman of the week on two other occasions.

Hazel amassed a Dixie State-record five no-hitters and pitched a perfect game March 3 against Notre Dame de Namur, only the second such game in program history.

Her freshman campaign ended with a record of 20-4, a 1.79 ERA and 142 strikeouts, while limiting opponents to a net .162 batting average.
