(Escalante, UT) — The Deer Springs Fire is 100-percent contained. Officials at Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument say key areas are now reopened that were closed for most of July as crews fought the wildfire. The fire started on July 7th and grew quickly, burning almost nine-thousand acres on the first day alone. Over 200 firefighters, aviators and other staff from various agencies got the fire 70-percent contained the first week. Containment was announced this week after the wildfire burned close to 12-thousand acres.
