An officer is dead and a man is in custody after an hours long manhunt spanning multiple counties. According to police, it started around 6:30 a.m. May 5 when a Santaquin police officer, Sergeant Bill Hooser, was assisting on a call for a man standing on the back of a semi trailer traveling northbound on I 15. Lt. Cory Slaymaker with the Spanish Fork Police Department shared during a press conference, the driver of the semi fled northbound for a short distance before turning around and driving the wrong way, then hitting Hooser who died at the scene. The driver, Michael Aaron Jayne, age 41 from Indiana, fled the scene on foot. Police said he was possibly armed with a stolen gun and was considered dangerous. It is believed Jayne stole multiple vehicles including a Ford F-150 in Sanpete County. The LDS Church issued a security advisory and cancelled all church services in the North Sanpete area. According to Slaymaker, around 11:30 a.m. “Jayne was located in the Vernal area and after a short pursuit crashed the vehicle and was taken into custody.”
