(Salt Lake City, UT) — The State of Utah is asking a judge to dismiss a lawsuit challenging the recently-passed law that bans transgender girls from playing school sports. Two girls brought the lawsuit forward, arguing that they would be excluded from participating in high school athletics. In their argument, the Utah Attorney General’s Office claims no harm would be done to the plaintiffs since one of them is academically ineligible to compete and the other may not be good enough to make the team. The state also contends the law does not violate equal rights protections in Utah because sports participation is not a political right.
