Morgan Trojans Win 3-A Girls State Tennis Title

SALT LAKE CITY-Saturday, the Morgan Trojans won their second all-time state title and second in three years in 3-A state girls tennis by virtue of several strong performances from key protagonists.

Morgan scored 19 points, causing them to outlast Grantsville as the Lady Cowboys posted 18 points for second place.

Manti was the highest placing Mid-Utah Radio Sports Network school competing as the Templars finished 9th with 3 points. Juab and Richfield tied with Union for 12th place with 2 points. South Sevier and Wasatch Academy tied for 13th place with Canyon View as the Rams, Tigers and Falcons posed 1 point apiece.

Among the Trojans’ stars was Katelyn Steele in 1st singles as the junior prevailed 6-1, 6-3 over Grantsville junior Sophie Crosby.

Her teammates, Ryann Jensen and Sydney Jensen won the 2nd doubles state title 6-4, 6-2 over Lauren Holt and Afton Orgill of Grantsville.

Kelsey Ortega Maeser Prep 6-4, 6-0 over Rowland Hall’s Tennyson Seethaler 6-4, 6-0

3rd Singles

Lieke Verwiej Carbon over Rachel Strelow of Juan Diego 6-3, 6-4

1st Doubles

Madison Bolinder and Addie Butler of Grantsville over Lucy Tripp and Brylee Adams of Morgan 6-4, 7- 6 (2)

In 3rd singles, Juab sophomore Emmy Lovell advanced to the semifinals, before falling to eventual state champion Verwiej of Carbon.

In 1st doubles, Manti’s Talia Cluff and Emma Christensen advanced to the second round, before falling to Rowland Hall’s Kate Altman and Agustina Salazar.

In 2nd doubles, South Sevier’s Mya Deaton and Laken Larsen advanced to the second round before falling to Madeline Frazier and Elena Owens of Rowland Hall.
