Wishnowsky, Gay, Hansen named All-American

SALT LAKE CITY – Utah punter Mitch Wishnowsky, kicker Matt Gay and linebacker Chase Hansen added to their All-America honors today, receiving accolades from the Associated Press and the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA). Wishnowsky was named second-team AP, while Gay was second-team FWAA and third-team AP, and Hansen was second-team FWAA.

Wishnowsky earlier was announced as a second-team Walter Camp All-American, while Gay was a second-team pick of Pro Football Focus and Hansen made The Athletic’s second team. All three made first-team All-Pac-12 in their senior seasons.

Wishnowsky, the 2016 Ray Guy Award winner, the first three-time Ray Guy finalist in the award’s history and a three-time All-American (2016-18), ranks second in the Pac-12 and ninth in the nation in punt average (45.1). He has led Utah to a No. 2 Pac-12 and No. 15 national ranking in net punting (40.65). The senior from Perth, Australia, has placed 22 punts inside the 20-yard line, including nine punts at or inside the 10-yard line, and has 19 punts of 50+ yards.

Gay, the 2017 Lou Groza Award winner and consensus All-American, leads the Pac-12 and ranks third nationally in field goals made (24).  He leads the nation in field goals made (10) and attempted (15) beyond 40 yards and leads the league in scoring (8.8 ppg). Gay made 21 consecutive field goals, the longest streak in the nation this year.

Hansen, Utah’s tackle leader with 114 stops, leads the Pac-12 and ranks fifth in the nation in total TFL (22.0). He is tied for fourth nationally in tackles for loss per game (1.7). Hansen is tied for fourth in the Pac-12 with 5.0 sacks. He has recorded at least 10 tackles in six games this season.

The FWAA All-America team is the second-longest continuously published team in major college football and added a second team in 2013. Hansen and Gay bring the number of Ute second team selections to four, joining Hunter Dimick (DE, 2016) and Wishnowsky (P, 2017).

Utah has had 19 players make the AP All-America teams since 1929. Gay (2017-18) and Wishnowsky (2016-18) join punter Tom Hackett (2014-15) as the only Utes named to the team more than once.
