HARRISONBURG, Va-Saturday evening, No. 3 seed Weber State football (11-3, 7-1 in Big Sky play) visits No. 2 seed James Madison (13-1, 8-0 in Colonial Athletic Conference play) in the FCS national semifinals at Harrisonburg, Va.
This is the furthest the Wildcats have ever made it in program history as they seek to advance to the FCS championship game January 12 at Frisco, Texas.
The Wildcats are coached by Jay Hill who is 47-29 (.618) in his sixth season at the helm of the Weber State program.
The Wildcats score 28.8 points per game, ranking them 51st nationally in scoring offense.
Junior quarterback Jake Constantine completes 61.9 percent of his passes (194-313) for 2,037 yard, 13 touchdowns and 10 interceptions on the season for Weber State.
Sophomore tailback Josh Davis has run for 1,075 yards (22nd nationally) on 170 carries for 6.3 yards per rush (13th nationally) to bolster the Wildcats’ running game.
Junior tailback Kevin Smith Jr. (169 car, 663 yards, 2 TD’s) and redshirt freshman back Kris Jackson (82 car, 366 yards, a team-best 10 rushing TD’s) have also assisted in the Weber State running game.
Sophomore receiver Devon Cooley leads the Wildcats in receptions (56), yards (691) and touchdowns (5). Fellow sophomore receiver Ty McPherson averages a team-best 15.04 yards per catch for the Wildcats.
Junior kicker Trey Tuttle has made 23 of 28 field goal attempts on the season for the Wildcats and 42 of his 45 PAT attempts for a team-best 111 points.
Defensively, the Wildcats give up 20.1 points per game. This ranks Weber State 14th nationally in scoring defense.
Junior linebacker Conner Mortensen has a team-best 91 tackles on the season for the Wildcats. Senior defensive end Adam Rodriguez leads the squad in both tackles for a loss (14) and sacks (10.5).
Redshirt freshman corner-back Eddie Heckard and freshman corner-back Ja’Kobe Harris have 3 interceptions apiece to pace the Wildcats. Heckard also leads the Wildcats in pass breakups with 7.
Senior defensive end Jonah Williams has 5 quarterback hits to lead the squad and is tied with redshirt freshman receiver John Abercrombie with 2 fumble recoveries on the season.
Junior safety Preston Smith and redshirt sophomore defensive end George Tarlas are each tied with the team lead in forced fumbles with 3 apiece.
The Dukes are coached by first-year head coach Curt Cignetti (13-1, .929).
James Madison scores 42.1 points per game, ranking the Dukes second nationally. James Madison also ranks seventh nationally in offensive yards per game (472.9 yards per game).
Redshirt senior signal-caller Ben DiNucci completes 71.2 percent of his passes (227-319), which is the best in the nation. He has also thrown for 2,982 yards, 25 touchdowns and 5 interceptions for a passer rating of 172.4 (2nd nationally). DiNucci has also run for 6 touchdowns on the season.
Junior tailback Percy Agyei-Obese (228 car, 1,098 yards [20th nationally], 19 TD’s [5th nationally]) is James Madison’s leading rusher.
Redshirt junior tailback Jawon Hamilton (145 car, 846 yards, 5 TD’s) has also been solid for the Dukes.
Redshirt senior receiver Brandon Polk (68 rec, 1,121 yards [13th nationally], 11 TD’s [tied for 16th nationally] is the Dukes’ leading receiver. Fellow redshirt senior receiver Riley Stapleton (46 rec, 526 yards, 6 TD’s) has also been productive for James Madison.
Redshirt junior kicker Ethan Ratke has made 22 of his 28 field goal attempts and 74 of his 75 PAT attempts on the season for the Dukes.
James Madison surrenders only 14.9 points per game, ranking them third nationally in scoring defense.
Redshirt senior linebacker Dimitri Holloway leads the squad with 111 tackles. Holloway also paces the Dukes in fumble recoveries (3).
Senior defensive lineman John Daka leads the Dukes in both tackles for a loss (26.5), sacks (16.5), and forced fumbles (4).
Senior safety Adam Smith has 6 interceptions to lead James Madison and redshirt senior corner-back Rashad Robinson has a team-best 9 pass breakups for the Dukes.
