Valley Buffaloes win tight 1A Boys Golf State Championship

WEST JORDAN, Utah- The Valley High School boys golf team trailed Region 20 rival Panguitch by one stroke after day 1 of the 1A state tournament at Mountain View Golf Course in West Jordan, but when day 2 ended they had won the state championship, for the fourth year in a row, by seven strokes.

Valley shot a first day 341 as a team, right behind Panguitch’s 341 and well ahead of Rich’s 352. Day 2 of the state tournament though brought new life to the Buffaloes as they shaved four strokes off of their previous days total to shoot a 2-day combined score of 678 to win the 1A state championship. Panguitch got five shots worse on the second day for a 2-day score of 685 which put them into a tie for second with Rich. The Rebels had the best second day with a score of 333. Rich ended up beating Panguitch in a playoff for the outright claim to second place and the Bobcats settled for third.

Individually Nick Jarman of Rich and Carsen Hinkhouse of Manila tied for medalist honors with a score of 157. Brody Schofield placed third with a 159. Acey Orton led Panguitch with a fourth place individual finish with a score of 160 and the state title winning Buffaloes were led by Chevy Spencer, who came in fifth with a score of 162.
