UVU’s Jake Toolson Named As WAC Player of the Year; Wyatt Lowell as Freshman of the Year

DENVER-Tuesday, Utah Valley men’s basketball standout, redshirt junior guard Jake Toolson was named as the Western Athletic Conference’s player of the year.

His teammate, freshman forward Wyatt Lowell, was named as the WAC’s freshman of the year as well.

Toolson is the first player in program history to be named as the WAC player of the year.

Toolson, who is the nephew of current Boston Celtics general manager Danny Ainge, scored a team-best 16.5 points this season for the Wolverines.

He is the only player in the nation to shoot better than 55 percent from the field (56.1 percent), 45 percent behind the arc (48.5 percent) and 85 percent at the foul line (86 percent) who played 20 or more games this season.

Toolson also ranks 44th nationally in field goal percentage (55.9 percent).

Lowell, a native of Gilbert, Ariz., led all WAC freshmen in scoring (5.4 points per game), rebounds (3 rebounds per game) and steals (0.5 steals per game) in conference games.

The Wolverines are the #2 seed in the WAC tournament and will play #7 seed UMKC Thursday at the Orleans Arena of Las Vegas.
