SALT LAKE CITY-A pair of University of Utah athletes were named as Tom Hansen medal recipients for the 2017-18 athletic season Tuesday. The recipients of this award are skier Martin Bergstrom and gymnast Maddy Stover.
The Hansen medal is annually awarded to each Pac-12 institution’s outstanding senior male and female student-athlete based on a combination of academics, athletics and leadership.
Hansen served as the then-Pac-10 commissioner from 1983-2009 and has had this distinction named in his honor.
Bergstrom, a native of Pitea, Sweden, won three individual NCAA championships in his career with the Utes and won back-to-back NCAA 10-km classic titles in 2017-18.
Additionally, in 2017, Bergstrom won the NCAA 20-km freestyle championship, leading the Utes to the NCAA national title.
Bergstrom was also a 2018 academic All-American and his 3.94 GPA is the best among male Utes student-athletes.
Stover was a 2015 second-team All-American and first-team all-Pac-12 performer on the balance beam and started for four NCAA qualifying teams.
Stover was also a three-time first-All-Pac-12 all-academic selection and NACGC Scholar All-American.
Stover graduated with a cumulative 3.85 GPA in communication and was a team captain and two-term president of Utah’s Crimson Council.
The conference now known as the Pac-12 has ensued in this tradition since the 1960-61 athletic season.
