LUBBOCK, Texas-Wednesday evening, Utah State (5-3, 2-0 in Mountain West Conference play) visits Lubbock, Texas to play New Mexico (3-4, 0-4 in Mountain West play) in what will be a home game for the Lobos.
Per Mountain West Conference regulations this season, the Aggies will stay in Lubbock through Friday evening when they will play New Mexico again.
The Aggies score 77.4 points per game, ranking Utah State 93rd nationally in scoring offense. Defensively, Utah State surrenders 63.5 points per game. This ties the Aggies for 42nd nationally in scoring defense with Connecticut and North Texas.
Redshirt junior guard Marco Anthony remains the Aggies’ leading scorer, as he averages 12.8 points per game.
Other Aggies to score in double figures on-average include junior forward Justin Bean (12.1 points per game, 8.1 rebounds per game, a team-best 13 steals), junior center, Portuguese national Neemias Queta (11.8 points per game, team-bests in rebounds [8.7], assists [36] and blocked shots [26, 11th nationally]) and freshman guard Rollie Worster (11.2 points per game).
Utah State is coached by Craig Smith, who is 61-18 (.772) in his third season as the Aggies’ head coach. He is 140-73 (. 657) as a Division I head coach, including his time at South Dakota (2014-2018).
New Mexico averages 71.3 points per game, ranking the Lobos 204th nationally in scoring offense.
Defensively, New Mexico gives up 71.8 points per game, ranking the Lobos 216th nationally in scoring defense.
Senior Australian national, guard/forward Makuach Maluach leads New Mexico in scoring (14.9 points per game) and rebounding (6.7 boards per contest).
The only other Lobo to score in double figures is redshirt junior forward Rob Brown (10.3 points per game).
Junior guard Saquan Singleton leads the Lobos in assists (18) and he is tied for the team lead in steals (6) with Maluach and Canadian national, sophomore guard Emmanuel Kuac.
Dominican national, redshirt freshman forward Bayron Matos, leads New Mexico with five blocked shots.
In his fourth season at New Mexico, the Lobos are coached by Paul Weir, who is 55-51 (.519) at the program’s helm.
Weir is 83-57 (.593) as a Division I head coach, having previously coached at New Mexico State.
The Aggies lead the Lobos 27-12 all-time, and are 11-9 at Albuquerque in the series.
