SALT LAKE CITY-Sophomore outfielder Danny Gelalich belted a grand slam in a productive 5-run 8th Inning for the #24 BYU baseball team as the Cougars routed hated rival Utah 10-3 Tuesday at Smith’s Ballpark during the Deseret Duel series that exists between the schools.
Gelalich had 5 RBI overall on the evening, while senior outfielder Brock Hale and sophomore left-handed pitcher/outfielder Mitch McIntyre had 2 RBI apiece for the 34-14 Cougars. Reid McLaughlin earned the win on the mound, improving him to 6-1 on the season for BYU.
BYU is next in action Thursday through Saturday at Santa Clara with this series against the Broncos representing the Cougars’ last regular season series.
Should the Cougars win this series, they will capture the West Coast Conference title.
Oliver Dunn had 2 RBI in the loss for the Utes, dropping them to 12-32 on the season.
Utah is next in action Thursday through Saturday in a home series against Washington State.
OREM, Utah-The Utah Valley Wolverines overcame a 13-5 deficit by exploding for 15 unanswered runs in a 20-13 win over Pac-12 foe Washington State Tuesday at UCCU Ballpark in non-conference baseball action.
Freshman infielder Mick Madsen had 5 RBI for the Wolverines, while senior center fielder Michael Beltran homered for Utah Valley, improving the squad to 14-36 on the season.
Brody Barnum homered in the loss for the Cougars as their disappointing season continued, dropping them to 10-37-1.
