Utah Athletes Continue To Excel at NCAA Track & Field Championships

EUGENE, Ore.-Thursday, the second day of the NCAA track and field national championships ensued at Hayward Field with history being made in one instance and Utah athletes excelling consistently throughout the day.

In the women’s 10,000-meter run, Kansas’ Sharon Lokedi, a Kenyan national, set a meet record as well as winning the  national championship, by posting a time of 32:09.20.

The women’s 1500-meter run saw a gallant effort from former Panguitch High star Whittni Orton, but the BYU standout placed 19th in the semis and therefore did not qualify for the championship heat in this event.

The women’s 3000-meter steeplechase saw Utah’s Grayson Murphy place second in the semis and Utah State’s Cierra Simmons finishd fourth. Therefore, both of these athletes advanced to the finals in this event which will be Saturday afternoon.

In the women’s javelin finals, BYU’s Ashton Riner placed a respectable 11th overall with a toss of 164-10 feet.

Finally, in the men’s decathlon, BYU’s Kevin Nielsen finished eighth overall, amassing 7,695 points in this event.

The meet resumes Friday.
