CEDAR CITY, Utah-Saturday, Southern Utah men’s basketball (10-6, 3-2 in Big Sky play) hosts Sacramento State (10-5, 3-3 in Big Sky play) as the Thunderbirds seek to stay ahead of the Hornets in the conference standings.
Thunderbirds head coach Todd Simon (46-69, .400 at SUU; 55-77, .417) is in his fourth season at the helm of the SUU program.
The Thunderbirds score 74.4 points per game, ranking SUU 112th nationally in scoring offense.
Redshirt senior guard/forward Cameron Oluyitan leads the Thunderbirds in scoring (13.7 points per game), assists (37) and steals (22).
Junior guard John Knight III (13.5 points per game) and redshirt senior forward Dwayne Morgan (10.9 points per game) also score in double figures on-average for the Thunderbirds.
Sophomore guard Harrison Butler leads SUU in rebounding (7.4 boards per game) and redshirt senior center, Senegalese national Daouda (David) N’Diaye leads the squad with 20 blocked shots.
The Thunderbirds surrender 64 points per game, ranking them 65th nationally in scoring defense.
Sacramento State is coached by Brian Katz (136-211, .392) who is in his 12th season at the helm of the Hornets’ program.
The Hornets score 61.7 points per game, ranking Sacramento State 338th nationally in scoring offense.
Senior center Joshua Patton leads the Hornets in scoring (14.3 points per game) and blocked shots (2.5 blocks per game).
Junior forward, Italian national Ethan Esposito, leads Sacramento State in rebounding, posting 5.6 boards per game.
Sophomore guard Brandon Davis posts a team-best 3.3 assists per game and senior guard, New Zealander Izayah Mauriohooho-Le’afa posts a team-best 1.9 steals per game.
The Hornets rank third nationally in scoring defense, surrendering only 54.7 points per game and are 14th nationally in field goal percentage defense. Sacramento State opponents only shoot 37.3 percent from the field.
The Thunderbirds lead the Hornets 15-13 all-time and the teams have split the last four games.
