SUU and UVU Meet On The Hardwood Wednesday

OREM, Utah-For the eighth time in history, Wednesday, Southern Utah University and Utah Valley University men’s basketball meet at the UCCU Center for a 6:00 pm tip-off.

UVU (2-1) scores 79.7 points per game (85th nationally) and surrenders 76 points per contest (tying the Wolverines for 225th nationally with Alabama A&M, Delaware, Montana State, Wichita State, Morgan State, UNC Wilmington and Tennessee Tech).

Senior guard Jamison Overton leads the Wolverines with 19.7 points per game. Overton also has a team-best three blocks for UVU. Redshirt sophomore center, Canadian national Fardaws Aimaq, posts 14.3 rebounds per contest to lead UVU on the glass.

Aimaq also averages 13 points per game for the Wolverines. Junior guard Trey Woodbury (19 points per game, a team-best 12 assists) also is a statistical leader for UVU.

The Wolverines are coached by second-year head coach Mark Madsen (12-20, .375).

The Thunderbirds (3-1; 2-0 in Big Sky Conference play) score 79.2 points per game, ranking them 90th nationally in scoring offense. SUU gives up 67.2 points per game, tying them for 119th nationally with La Salle.

Junior guard Tevian Jones leads the Thunderbirds with 15.3 points per game. The reigning Big Sky player of the week, Maizen Fausett (6.3 rebounds per game; 13.5 points per game) is SUU’s leader on the glass.

Senior guard John Knight III (14 points per game) leads the squad in assists with 23. Senior guard Dre Marin (12 points per game) has a team-best 6 steals for the Thunderbirds.

Redshirt senior, Croatian national forward/center Ivan Madunic, has a team-best 7 steals for SUU.

In his fifth season coaching the Thunderbirds, Todd Simon (65-87, .428) appears to have turned the corner in Cedar City for his squad.

The Wolverines lead the all-time series 4-3, including a 2-1 mark at Orem. The Thunderbirds won the most recent game at Orem, however, prevailing 68-54 December 5, 2015.
