Sam Merrill, Yoeli Childs, Named To Senior CLASS Award All-American Team

OVERLAND PARK, Kan.-Tuesday, former Utah college basketball stars Yoeli Childs and Sam Merrill were named to the Senior CLASS Award All-American Team.

Merrill, one of the brightest stars in Utah State men’s basketball history, made the first team and Childs checked in on the second team.

Merrill, a former Bountiful High School star posted 19.7 points and 4.1 rebounds per game for the Aggies, while shooting 41 percent from behind the arc and 89.3 percent at the foul line.

Childs, a former Bingham High star, netted 22.2 points and 9 rebounds per game for the Cougars, leading the squad in both of these categories. He also shot 57.4 percent from the field and led the squad with 17 blocks. Childs accomplished these feats despite playing in only 19 games this season because of an NCAA suspension and several nagging injuries.

The Senior CLASS Award winner was Marquette senior guard Markus Howard who led the nation with 27.8 points per game while shooting 84.7 percent from the free throw line.

Other first team-members included Kansas senior center Udoka Azubuike (13.7 points, 10.5 rebounds per game), Seton Hall senior guard Myles Powell (21 points per game) and Michigan State senior guard Cassius Winston (18.6 points, 5.9 assists per game, 85.2 percent at the foul line).

Joining Childs on the second team were Dartmouth senior guard James Foye (9.7 points per game), senior forward/center Nathan Knight (20.7 points, 10.5 rebounds per game, 49 blocked shots) of William & Mary, LSU senior guard Skylar Mays (16.7 points, 5 rebounds per game, 85.4 percent at the foul line) and Penn State senior forward Lamar Stevens (17.6 points, 6.9 rebounds per game).

These selections were made by a nationwide vote of Division I men’s basketball coaches, national basketball media and fans.

Howard achieved this honor by virtue of being considered the most outstanding senior student athlete in Division I men’s college basketball.
