Numerous Weber/SUU Softball Stars Honored by Big Sky Tuesday

OGDEN, Utah-Just days before the Big Sky Conference conducts its annual softball championship tournament, the Ogden-based conference released its all-conference softball teams Tuesday.

These teams consisted of a local flavor on the first team, featuring four Weber State Wildcats and one Southern Utah Thunderbird.

The Wildcats, who are the #2 overall seed in the conference tournament, are represented on the all-conference team by catcher Molly Horne, first base Ashlyn Visser, outfielder Takesha Saltern and pitcher Kirtlyn Bohling.

The Thunderbirds were represented by senior center fielder Sarah Murphy. Murphy posted a .388 batting average on the season, and upped this to .403 in conference play.

Murphy was second in hits in the conference in hits with 25 and committed only one error in 34 games while starting at center field.

Making the second team for the Wildcats were senior second base McKinley Brinkerhoff and sophomore outfielder Landi Hawker.

The Thunderbirds were represented on the second team by pitcher/utility Kalei Watkins, also named as the Big Sky’s freshman of the year.

Receiving honorable mention from the conference was Weber State’s sophomore shortstop Sydney White.

For Southern Utah, this honor was received by freshman shortstop Taylei Williams, a former Juab High star, and junior outfielder Kendall Kapitzke.

Williams and Kaptizke each finished in the Top 15 in the conference in batting average, Williams at .338 and Kapitzke at .323.

Williams placed second in the conference in triples with four and Kapitzke was consistent, finishing in the top 5 in every conceivable team category for the Thunderbirds.
