SALT LAKE CITY-Utah football promises to have special teams as one of the strengths of the squad this upcoming season.
This was validated Tuesday as kicker Matt Gay and punter Mitch Wishnowsky were named as first-team preseason All-Americans by Athlon Sports.
Each of them are returning All-Americans who have won the top award at their respective positions.
Gay, a senior out of Orem, Utah, was the Lou Groza award winner in 2017 and Wishnowsky, a senior out of Perth, Australia, won the Ray Guy award in 2016.
In his first season of college football, Gay was a consensus All-American in 2017 as he led the nation in field goals made, field goals made per game, 50+ yard field goals and field goals attempted.
Gay led the Pac-12 in field goal percentage and ranked fifth in national annals, making 30 of his 34 attempts (88.2 percent) on the season.
Wishnowsky ranked sixth in the nation in net punting last season (43.9 yards per attempt) and in percentage of punts inside the 10 last season.
