LOGAN, Utah-This past weekend, former Utah State head football coach Chuck Mills passed away at the age of 92.
Mills, the 16th head coach in Aggies history, coached the squad from 1967-1972 and amassed a record of 38-23-1 (.621). This included a 17-7 (.708) mark at Logan.
Mills also went 8-4 against BYU and Utah and his 38 wins rank third all-time in school annals.
Mills led the Aggies to four winning seasons, including successive 8-3 campaigns in 1971 and 1972.
Mills also made history in taking the first American collegiate football team to Japan in 1971 as the Aggies played a pair of games against Japanese All-Star teams.
The Japanese equivalent of the Heisman Trophy, known as the Mills Trophy, is annually presented to the top college football player in Japan.
Mills coached five All-Americans at Utah State: defensive linemen Phil Olsen and Bill Staley (1st team All-Americans), quarterback Tony Adams (2nd team All-American) and receivers Mike O’Shea and Tom Forzani (honorable mention).
Mills was born December 28, 1928 at Chicago, Ill. and was a 1950 graduate of Illinois State University.
From 1950-1997, Mills coached at various levels of football and was inducted into the Utah State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2008.
