ST. GEORGE, Utah-This weekend, Dixie State baseball (20-6, 10-2 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play) hosts the Colorado State-Pueblo Thunderwolves (13-12, 8-4 in RMAC play) at Bruce Hurst Field.
This series features a single game on both Friday and Sunday with a Saturday doubleheader.
The Trailblazers are coming off a series split against New Mexico Highlands at Las Vegas, N.M. while the Cowboys snapped Dixie State’s 8-game winning streak.
While the Trailblazers outscored the Cowboys 32-8 over the final two games of the series, losses in the first two games at New Mexico Highlands dropped Dixie State out of two national polls and to #25 in this week’s NCBWA poll.
Against the Thunderwolves, senior right-hander Jayden Murray (5-2, 2.88 ERA) gets the nod on the mound for Dixie State Friday. Saturday, sophomore left-handed pitcher Jack Gonzales (5-0 on the season, 3.14 ERA) and right-handed junior pitcher Preston Hannay (3-1, 5.52 ERA) will be on the hill.
Sunday, the Trailblazers are going with senior right-handed pitcher Tyler Rosas (1-1, 1.86 ERA).
Junior infielder Jake Engel (10 home runs, 26 RBI) is Dixie State’s offensive leader.
The Thunderwolves are led by senior infielder/outfielder Dakota Popham (3 home runs, 22 RBI) and senior right-handed pitcher Josh Dahl ( a team-best 4-2 record) gets the nod in the first game of the series Saturday.
This is a historic match-up as the Trailblazers and Thunderwolves have never met on the diamond before.
Dixie State is 253-95 (.727) at Bruce Hurst Field since moving up to NCAA Division II in 2007.
