GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.-Thursday through Saturday, Dixie State baseball (32-14, 18-10 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play) concludes the regular season with a trip to the Western Slope to face the Colorado Mesa Mavericks (38-8, 26-6 in RMAC play).
The series consists of four games, with single games on Thursday and Friday and a Saturday doubleheader.
Thursday, the Trailblazers will go with right-handed pitcher Preston Hannay (5-3). Friday, Dixie State rides with staff ace Jayden Murray (9-2, 3.66 ERA). Murray also leads the Trailblazers with 78 strikeouts.
Saturday, the Trailblazers will go with left-handed pitcher Jack Gonzales (5-2) and a hurler yet to be determined in the series finale.
The Mavericks counteract with right-handed pitcher Andrew Morris (3-1, 3.20 ERA) Thursday, right-handed pitcher Garrett Hutson Friday (8-1, 2.66 ERA) and right-handed pitcher Nathan Wilson in the first game Saturday (2-0, 5.29 ERA). Hutson is 8-1 with a 2.66 ERA while senior right-handed pitcher JR McDermott (7-0 with a 2.29 ERA) is the Mavericks’ overall leading pitcher.
Junior catcher Cade Spurlin leads the Trailblazers in batting average (.397).
Junior infielder Jake Engel leads Dixie State in both home runs (12) and RBI (42).
The Mavericks are led in batting average by sophomore infielder Jordan Stubbings (.357) with senior outfielder Hunter Douglas (.354) and senior infielder Dominic DeMarco (.350) closely behind him.
Stubbings also leads the Mavericks in home runs (10) and RBI (39). Douglas also has 10 home runs for Colorado Mesa.
The Mavericks lead the Trailblazers 27-14 in the overall all-time series.
Both the Trailblazers and Mavericks have guaranteed themselves a place in the upcoming RMAC conference tournament with the winner to earn an automatic bid in the NCAA Division II baseball tournament June 1-8 at Cary, N.C.
