Covey Lands Pair of Weekly Special Teams Honors

SAN FRANCISCO and LOUISVILLE, Ky. – University of Utah junior wide receiver and return specialist Britain Covey earned two weekly accolades on Monday, as the Provo, Utah, native was named the Pac-12 Special Teams Player of the Week. Additionally, Covey was one of five players nationally to be placed on the Paul Hornung Award Honor Roll.

Covey amassed a career-best 132 punt return yards on six attempts in last Saturday’s game at San Diego State. He highlighted the day with an 80-yard runback for a touchdown, the longest single return in the Pac-12 this season. Covey’s 132 total punt return yards for the night are the most in FBS this season and rank sixth all-time at Utah for a single game. The last time a Pac-12 player had such a performance was during the 2013 season, and Utah’s Shaky Smithson was the last Ute to return for as many yards, doing so in the 2010 season.

During the SDSU game, Covey moved into No. 2 in program history for career punt return yards (871), and can surpass LaVon Edwards’ program-best (892) with 22 more yards. He sits second all-time at Utah in career punt returns (73), trailing only Edwards (112) who set the record during a career spanning 1988-91.

Along with his six punt returns on the game, Covey returned one kickoff for 25 yards.

Through Week 3, Covey leads FBS football with 20.6 yards per punt return. He is the only active FBS player with over 800 career punt return yards, as well as the only active wide receiver in the FBS that has over 1,500 career receiving yards and 600 career punt return yards.

Utah kicks off Pac-12 Conference play this Saturday, Sept. 25, when the Utes host Washington State for Homecoming at Rice-Eccles Stadium. Game time is slated for 12:30 p.m. MT, with the matchup televised on Pac-12 Networks.
