BYU Men’s Basketball Returns To Action Saturday Against Oral Roberts

PROVO, Utah-Saturday, BYU men’s basketball (10-4) concludes its non-conference portion of the schedule by hosting the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles (7-5) of the Summit League.

In his first season at BYU, head coach Mark Pope (10-4, .714 at BYU; 87-60, .592 as a collegiate head coach), has led the Cougars to key wins over Virginia Tech, Utah State and Houston which may bolster their NCAA Tournament chances.

The Cougars score 77.8 points per game, ranking BYU 69th nationally in scoring offense.

Senior forward Yoeli Childs (a team-best 20.8 points and 10.4 rebounds per game, tied for the team lead with 6 blocked shots) is the Cougars’ statistical leader.

Senior guard Jake Toolson ties Childs for the team lead in blocked shots and also averages 14.1 points and 5 rebounds per game.

Other statistical stalwarts for the Cougars include senior guard TJ Haws (12.4 points per game, a team-best 65 assists and tied for a team-best 13 steals) and junior guard Alex Barcello (11 points, tied with Haws for the team lead in steals).

BYU surrenders 66.6 points per game as the Cougars rank 131st nationally in scoring defense.

The Golden Eagles are coached by Paul Mills who is 29-47 (.382) in his second season at the helm of the Oral Roberts program.

In starting 7-5, the Golden Eagles are 6-0 at home but seeking only their second road win of the season at the Marriott Center.

Oral Roberts averages 78.8 points per game, ranking the Golden Eagles 50th nationally in scoring offense.

The Golden Eagles’ leading scorer is redshirt senior forward Emmanuel Nzekwesi (16.1 points per game) and he is also the squad’s leader in rebounds (8.7 per game).

Also scoring in double figures on average for Oral Roberts are freshman guard Max Abmas (13.9 points per game), senior guard Deondre Burns (13.8 points per game, a team-best 42 assists) and redshirt sophomore forward Kevin Obanor (11.3 points per game, a team-best 9 blocked shots).

Senior guard Sam Kearns (a team-best 13 steals) has also contributed to the Golden Eagles’ success this season.

The Golden Eagles surrender 67.5 points per game, tying them for 154th nationally in scoring defense with UMBC.

The Cougars lead the Golden Eagles 6-0 all-time, including a 4-0 mark at Provo.
