PROVO, Utah-Tuesday, BYU men’s basketball added 6-6 Timpview High School guard Jake Wahlin as the local star gave a verbal commitment to head coach Mark Pope, becoming the first to do so for the Cougars from the class of 2021.
In Wahlin’s 52 career games at Timpview, he averages 9.96 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.1 assists per contest.
A late bloomer originally from Keller, Texas, last season, Wahlin netted 13.9 points, 6.7 rebounds and 2 assists per game for the Thunderbirds, who fell 66-53 to Springville in last season’s 5-A state championship game at the Huntsman Center in Salt Lake City.
Wahlin chose the Cougars over Arizona State, Nevada, San Diego State and Utah State.
Wahlin comes from athletic stock as his grandfather, Marvin Wahlin, was a star halfback at Arizona State, earning “Outstanding Devil” honors in 1952.
His father, Rick, played on BYU’s football team in the late 1980’s and his sister, Malery Wahlin, played on BYU’s women’s volleyball team in 2014.
His brothers-in-law include former BYU football stars, linebacker Harvey Langi (2014-2016) and receiver Colby Pearson (2014-2016).
As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Wahlin plans to serve a mission for the Salt Lake City-based faith before enrolling at BYU.
