PROVO, Utah-Sunday, upon the release of the new weekly college basketball polls, BYU rose to No. 17 in The Associated Press Top 25 and is currently ranked No. 18 in the USA Today coaches poll.

The Cougars, who bested No. 2 Gonzaga 91-78 Saturday, are ranked in the AP poll for the second consecutive week.

They entered the USA Today coaches poll for the first time since ending the 2010-11 season ranked No. 12.

In his first season at the helm of the Cougars’ program, head coach Mark Pope is 23-7 (.767) and has BYU at second in the West Coast Conference with a league record of 12-3.

Additionally, senior forward Yoeli Childs was named as the WCC player of the week per an announcement from the league office Monday.

Childs led the Cougars to wins over Santa Clara and Gonzaga by averaging 25 points, 10.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 steals against the Broncos and Bulldogs.

The Bingham High School product also shot 51.3 percent from the field for the week and 42.9 percent behind the arc.

Childs, who is averaging 21.2 points and 8.6 rebounds this season, earned his third career WCC Player of the Week honor.
